The President of the Republic and commander-in-chief of the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF), Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, has charged officers, men and women of the GAF and all other security agencies to help preserve the country’s stability and democratic credentials on the African continent during the December 2024 presidential and parliamentary elections.
Addressing officers, men, women and auxiliary staff of the Ghana Armed Forces at Burma Camp yesterday (Friday 22 December) at the annual West African Soldiers’ Social Activities (WASSA), President Akufo-Addo said the Ghana Armed Forces and all other security agencies must work to ensure a peaceful atmosphere during the 2024 general election.
“Next year our nation goes to the polls for the ninth time in the history of the Fourth Republic. Our nation is described as the beacon of democracy and stability and it is in our deep collective interest that this status is firmly maintained.
“I urge you, officers, men, and women of the armed forces and, indeed, of the other security services, to help preserve our nation’s enviable record,” President Akufo-Addo said.
“You must help ensure that the elections are conducted in an atmosphere of peace and serenity, thereby protecting the sovereign will of the Ghanaian people and guaranteeing the longevity of the Fourth Republic,” President Akufo-Addo said.
Professionalism
In his address, the president commended the men and women of the armed forces for their dedication to duty and professionalism, which, he said, has produced a conducive environment in Ghana for socio-economic development.
The armed forces, said the president, has stuck to core values, customs and traditions and has remained steadfast in its role of safeguarding constitutional order and the territorial integrity of Ghana.
President Akufo-Addo also commended the armed forces for the critical role it played in the successful organisation in Accra of the recent Africa Reparations Conference, as well as the United Nations 2023 Peacekeeping Ministerial Conference, the first to be held in Africa, which took place on 5-6 December.
Combat-ready
The Minister of Defence, Dominic Nitiwul, also addressed guests at the WASSA.
He spoke of several projects undertaken by the Akufo-Addo government, with the aim of dealing with accommodation challenges faced by the armed forces.
Nitiwul said that the government has taken deliberate steps to retool the armed forces to make them combat-ready. This, he said, is with the clear aim of equipping the forces to confront all existing and emerging security threats that the country faces.
Maintain security
Vice-Admiral Seth Amoama, the Chief of Defence Staff, commended President Akufo-Addo and his government for their dedicated interest in the armed forces and their efforts to ensure the continuous retooling of the forces, which has led to an enhancement in their operational capabilities.
Vice-Admiral Amoama said the Ghana Armed Forces stand ready to serve the people of Ghana by working hard to ensure that the nation’s peace and security are maintained at all times, “even at peril of their lives”.
