From Ashaiman to World’s Most Interesting Mathematician: Dream beyond your surroundings, says Angela Tabiri
Angela Tabiri is making headlines by winning the prestigious title of the World’s Most Interesting Mathematician
The Academic Manager for the Girls in Mathematical Sciences Programme (GMSP) and the current World’s Most Interesting Mathematician, Angela Tabiri, is advising young girls to continue to be passionate about life and never give up on their dreams.
Speaking on the Road to Greatness segment on the Asaase Breakfast Show on Thursday (1 August), Tabiri advised the youth to constantly work towards their dreams to make it a reality.
“Dream beyond your surrounding. Believe in your dream and find people around you who believe in your dream. And also, take action.”
Affectionately called the Maths Queen, Tabiri, who hails from Ashaiman, went ahead to compete on the global stage to win the prestigious math award.
“So, as a child, my surroundings were very gloomy. But I dreamt that I could make a difference with the talents I had, irrespective of where I came from. And secondly, believe in your dream. Listen to me.”
She, however, added that math is all around us, so it’s never boring.
“So when we think of math, we think of it as being abstract and very boring. But we want to highlight that there’s math all around us, in very layman terms, so that you, in the studio, now understand a non-permeating property, which is a quantum,” Tabiri explained.
Her journey to becoming a renowned mathematician began at a young age when she discovered her passion for numbers and problem-solving
She is an inspiration to young women, especially young girls in Africa, who either want to or are pursuing courses that would eventually lead to careers in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM).
“So, first, I am seen as a woman or a female who has laser-trailing math. It makes them [young girls], first, believe that they can also do it. And secondly, we also encourage them by using very hands-on experience.”
“We have a Girls in Mathematical Science programme at Aims where we take high school girls who are interested in mathematics and nurture them.”
