Fun trip to Borteyman Sports Complex turns into church event as UGSRC allegedly scams students

The University of Ghana Students’ Representative Council (UGSRC), led by Frank Tsikata, has allegedly defrauded some students by claiming to take them on a tour of the Borteyman Sports Complex.

The UGSRC mobilised University of Ghana students to attend a “fun trip” to the Borteyman Sports Complex, but rather took them to church.

According to SRC president Tsikata, transportation and food were provided for free, and students will have the opportunity to showcase their talents, have access to a photo booth, and participate in a leadership symposium.

The trip was scheduled for Saturday, 1 June 2024, at exactly 9am according to a statement released and signed by the president on 31 May 2024.

One of the campus media outlets, @Voice_of_Legon broke the news on X “Conveying University of Ghana students to a church event under the guise of a “fun trip” is highly disrespectful to the students we aim to serve.

Some of the students who attended the supposed fun trip said “they wanted us to join the event by force. A Muslim among the attendees spoke to the media and said, “For me, I am a Muslim, I can’t be attending events like this or whatever.”

The UGSRC has yet to comment on the issue.

The Borteyman Sports Complex facilities are a 1,000-seater capacity swimming pool, comprising a 10-lane competition swimming pool and an eight-lane warm-up swimming pool, alongside a multipurpose Sports Hall capable of seating 1,000 spectators for various events such as basketball, badminton, netball, table tennis, and weightlifting.

It also has a 500-seater temporary dome for handball, volleyball, judo, karate, taekwondo, fencing, arm-wrestling, and a five-tennis court complex, including a 1,000-seater Centre Court.
