Galamsey: 200 soldiers deployed to protect water bodies

Soldiers have been deployed in the Central and Western Regions on the orders of the President, Nana Akufo-Addo, to stop mining within water bodies

The President, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, has directed the military to remove all persons and logistics involved in mining from all water bodies across the country, effective Wednesday 28 April 2021.

A statement issued and signed by Information Minister, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, said 200 military officers have so far been dispatched for the exercise.

The directive is coming barely two weeks after a two-day National Stakeholder Dialogue on Small Scale Mining in Accra to find solution to the illegal mining menace.

The ministry of defence and the Ghana Armed Forces are expected to provide a detailed brief on developments and sustainability efforts on Friday.
