Ghana secures spot in 2024 Men’s IHF Trophy Africa

The Ghana U-20 team defeated Côte d'Ivoire 32-28 in the final to secure first-ever IHF Trophy Men Zone 3 Africa trophy

Ghana’s national U-20 handball team celebrates a historic victory as they clinch gold at the International Handball Federation’s (IHF) Trophy Men Zone 3 Africa, held at Accra’s Borteyman Sports Complex from February 20th to 25th, 2024. This triumph earns them a coveted spot in the upcoming 2024 Men’s IHF Trophy Africa.

The journey to victory commenced with a thrilling 44-44 draw against eventual finalist Côte d’Ivoire. Led by standout performances from players like Prince Kubi, Dzorsu Atsu, and goalkeeper Edward Nana Addo, Ghana defeated Togo (49-18) and Benin (32-26) to set the stage for a rematch with Côte d’Ivoire in the Grand Final.

In an electrifying showdown, Ghana emerged victorious with a 32-28 triumph, seizing the trophy and securing their spot in the continental phase of the Men’s IHF Trophy.

However, Ghana’s U-18 handball team, despite their commendable efforts, clinched the silver medal, falling short of qualifying for the 2024 IHF Trophy Africa. Notable performances from players like Atittah Bernard Brown got them past Togo (57-13) and Benin (34-21). Yet, they faced formidable challenges against the defending champions, suffering defeats in both the second round (26-31) and the Grand Final rematch (25-33).

The 2024 Men’s IHF Trophy Africa, overseen by Medhat El Beltagy, former Minister of Sports in Egypt and current First Vice President of the Confederation of African Handball (CAHB), drew participation from six nations, including Nigeria, Côte d’Ivoire, Togo, Benin, Liberia, and host nation Ghana.
