Ghana sets sights on Los Angeles 2028 Olympics baseball debut
Ghana Baseball and Softball Federation launches ambitious Olympic campaign
The Ghana Baseball and Softball Federation (GBSF) is swinging for the fences, aiming to qualify for the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles.
Federation president Ernest Danso, in an exclusive interview with asaaseradio.com, revealed the ambitious plan and outlined that preparations have been underway since 2023.
“We are hoping to make an appearance when it comes to the Olympics in Los Angeles 2028,” Danso declared. “We are preparing towards it; we know we don’t have the resources, but we have started. We started actually last year with all the preparation.”
The GBSF’s roadmap includes the inaugural Koshien Baseball Championship, a tournament scheduled for Labone Senior High School between 31 August and 1 September.
This championship forms part of a wider initiative known as the Baseballership Educational Programme, which will also see a visit from a US baseball team.
“We’re putting a team together from this Koshien and a few other ones,” Danso explained. “We work in various parts of the country; we’re getting the best athletes; we’re getting some few equipment when it comes to the batting cages and various things that we need.”
“Then after this programme, in September, we have a US team also coming into town; we’re gonna sign a partnership deal with them as well to make sure we achieve this dream when it comes to the Olympics.”
Danso believes a Ghanaian presence at the Olympics will have a transformative effect on the sport in the country.
“We believe if we’re able to make [an] appearance, the name of Ghana will be out there,” he emphasised. “If they see what Ghana is made of when it comes to baseball, they might be interested in coming and establishing academies like the way the [LA] Dodgers of the United States have done in Uganda and Senegal currently; if we get one or two academies here, I’m telling you that’s a [game-changer] for us.”
