Ghana Taekwondo kicks off preparations for Youth Olympics in 2026

The championships, held in partnership with the Embassy of the Republic of Korea, will take place on July 27th, 2024, at the Bukom Boxing Arena inside the Trust Sports Emporium

The Ghana Taekwondo Federation (GTF) is set to use the upcoming 14th Korean Ambassador’s Taekwondo Championships as a key talent identification event for the 2026 Youth Olympic Games in Dakar, Senegal.

The championships, held in partnership with the Embassy of the Republic of Korea, will take place on 27 July 2024, at the Bukom Boxing Arena inside the Trust Sports Emporium.

This competition will serve as a crucial scouting ground for promising junior athletes aged 13–17, with aspirations set towards the 2026 Games (30 October–13 November).

In an exclusive interview with asaaseradio.com, GTF Communications Director Davis Clottey emphasised the long-term vision behind the selection process, stating that though the athletes selected are “not a team per se,” the GTF will be “mentoring them.”

This, according to Clottey, will allow the GTF to begin preparing these young athletes early, with plans to register them for upcoming African junior championships.

The focus of the 14th Korean Ambassador’s Taekwondo Championships will be on junior and cadet athletes, showcasing their talents in both kyorugi (sparring) and poomsae (forms) disciplines.

Registration for the championships is open to athletes registered with Ghana Taekwondo, with a deadline of 15 July 2024 (12:00 AM).
