Ghanaian sprinters storm into 100m semis at Paris Olympics

Ghanaian sprint stars Azamati and Saminu book their place in the Olympic 100m semis, setting the stage for a potential historic medal

Ghanaian sprinters Benjamin Azamati and Abdul-Rasheed Saminu have booked their places in the men’s 100m semi-finals at the 2024 Paris Olympics on Saturday (3 August) at the Stade de France.

Azamati, Ghana’s national men’s 100m record holder, continued his recent resurgence in form to finish second in his heat behind Jamaica’s Kishane Thompson, who clocked a winning time of 10.00 seconds. The Ghanaian clocked 10.08 seconds to advance.

The 26-year-old has battled injury this year, with his average 100m time of 10.27 seconds reflecting a challenging start to the season.

However, recent impressive performances at the Paavo Nurmi Games and Motonet GP Kuortane signalled a return to top form, culminating in Saturday’s impressive heat performance.

Saminu, the younger of the two, also delivered a standout performance to qualify from his heat.

The 22-year-old, who boasts a 10.02 second personal best (PB) from earlier this year, clocked 10.06 seconds to finish third behind Italy’s Lamont Marcell Jacobs and Nigeria’s Kayinsola Ajayi.

Both Ghanaians will be aiming to progress to the final when they line up in their respective semifinals scheduled for 18:05 GMT on Sunday (4 August) at the Stade de France.

Azamati faces a tough test against world champion Noah Lyles and Jamaica’s Oblique Seville in Semifinal 1, while Semifinal 3 will see Saminu compete against Kenya’s Ferdinand Omanyala and Thompson.
