President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has said Ghana’s adherence to democracy has not waned.
He said it is evident that the country’s democratic structures of governance are capable of accommodating the most difficult circumstances.
Addressing the nation on Saturday (6 January) ahead of the country’s Constitution Day, the president urged Ghanaians to play an active role in ensuring the longevity of the country’s Fourth Republic.
President Akufo-Addo said “… It is, therefore, gratifying to note that the nation’s adherence to democracy has not waned. We know that there are no quick fixes to the challenges confronting us and as we have seen in recent times, democratic structures of governance are capable of accommodating the most difficult of circumstances.
“We have happily turned the corner on our economic situation as we experience the rebound of the national economy and we’ll continue to work strongly at the problems facing the nation knowing that the solution every four years rest in part and the sovereign will of the Ghanaian people…”
The president said by common consent, all well-meaning Ghanaians agree that the democratic form of government is the most preferable adding “we must do everything possible to guarantee the longevity of the Fourth Republic”.
2024 Election
President Akufo-Addo said it must be in the collective interest of every Ghanaian to ensure that the rules and regulations of the conduct of this year’s elections are fair and transparent.
He said democracies are grounded on viable elections.
“This year like we have done in the eight other preceding occasions, we will go to the polls to elect the president … no true democrat can disregard the importance of elections and the sanctity of the ballot.”
