Ghana’s financial sector: crisis, what crisis?

The Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration presents a high point of the GIMPA Law Lectures series 2020 – a virtual conference on “The Banking and Financial Sector Crisis in Ghana: Towards Sustainable Reform”

The School of Law at the Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration is holding a high-level virtual conference over two days to discuss the long-term implications of the process of reform of banking and related sectors in Ghana, initiated by the national regulatory authorities in 2018.

Among the leading speakers at the conference, which launched today at 9am, will be Dr Ernest Addison, Governor of the Bank of Ghana, and Reverend Daniel Ogbarmey Tetteh, director general of the Securities and Exchange Commission.

They will be joined by a distinguished group of other prominent figures with crucial roles to play in the continuing reform of banking and finance, from Alhassan Andani, chief executive director of Stanbic Bank and president of the Ghana Association of Bankers, to Honourable Ken Ofori-Atta, the Minister for Finance.

Make it more responsive

They will be joined by senior legal counsel and academics from peer institutions in Ghana, Kenya, South Africa and the United States, including the University of Nairobi and White & Case LLP.

Speakers will discuss everything from ethics and reform to the role of regulators and how to make the financial sector more responsive to social needs in the era of COVID-19.

The GIMPA Faculty of Law organises conferences biennially to provide an open platform for discussion and resolution of topical national and international issues. This year’s event carries special importance, coming as it does during tenth-anniversary celebrations for the GIMPA Faculty of Law.

Banking collapse

“Financial sector reform has become topical within the past few years as a result of the collapse of several banks and other financial institutions,” says Professor Justice Dennis Dominic Adjei, Dean of the Faculty of Law at GIMPA and director of the Judicial Training Institute (pictured).

“The event will provide an opportunity for all stakeholders in the financial sector of Ghana’s economy to meet in a collegial environment and debate their ideas, leading to concrete resolutions and proposals.”

The conference is non-paying and open to members of the public. To register and log on to discussion sessions, visit the GIMPA website at: https://www.gimpalawconferences.org/
