Ghana’s U19s crash out of 2026 ICC U19 Cricket World Cup Qualifiers

Defeat to Nigeria ends the Young Gunn's U19 campaign

Ghana’s U19 men’s cricket team has been eliminated from the race to qualify for the 2026 ICC U19 Cricket World Cup in Sri Lanka.

The Young Gunns suffered a disappointing 119-run defeat to Nigeria on Tuesday (6 August) in the 2024 ICC U19 Men’s Africa Division 2 Qualifiers in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.

The team had been aiming to replicate their 2016 success when they topped the division undefeated.

That achievement earned them a place in the 2017 ICC U19 Men’s Africa Division 1 Qualifiers, where they ultimately failed to secure their place at the 2018 U19 Cricket World Cup, finishing third behind Uganda and Kenya.

However, this year’s campaign has fallen short. Despite opening their campaign with a convincing four-wicket victory over Mozambique, the team suffered heavy defeats to Tanzania and Nigeria, leaving them unable to progress to the playoff stage.

Nigeria and hosts Tanzania have secured their places in the playoff round, with a chance to qualify for the ICC Men’s U19 World Cup Africa Qualifier in 2025.

The Ghana team led by Lee Nyarko will now return home to regroup and prepare for future challenges.
