The Ghana Integrated Aluminium Development Corporation (GIADEC) has expressed optimism in expanding the country’s bauxite production to meet future needs and enhance production capacity.
Parliament’s in June 2024 granted approval of a mining lease for the Ghana Bauxite Company. This development is pivotal for Ghanaās mining sector, given bauxite’s crucial role in aluminium production.
The approval could impact local economies, employment, and the environment, depending on how the mining operations are managed and regulated.
Speaking to Asaase Business during a technical workshop on the 2021/2022 GHEITI reports for the mining and oil/gas sector, the senior manager of technical services at GIADEC, Kwabena Mensah emphasised GIADECās commitment to sustainable mining practices to boost production.
āWhat is new in this is that GIADEC has added on two new hills, two additional hills within our environment, so anything bauxite, bauxite deposits are held by here that can support the government and the people of Ghana. To ensure that they can meet the quantities and the volume that we seek for the integrated aluminium project, we’ve added on two more fields. They are formed back in the Bucha hills, so that we do have enough resources to meet the new capacity that they are required to meet.ā
He said the introduction of two additional hills for mining will bring several changes to the process of extracting the mineral.
āSignificantly, the mining process itself is going to be improved upon using new networks that are already in play in the Amazon forest…” he added.
