Girls-in-ICT: Owusu-Ekuful tours ICT training centres in Damongo

The minister said she was impressed with the quality of training during the four-day visit

The minister for communications and digitalisation, Ursula Owusu-Ekuful, toured four centres for the Girls-in-ICT programme in the West Gonja Municipality of the Savanna Region on Friday 5 May.

The minister said she was impressed with the quality of training during the four-day visit. She said, “We have already trained the 100 teachers as trainers so that they will train 1,000 girls selected from all the districts in the Savannah Region. The training started on 25 April.

“This is the second batch and I wanted to come and witness the training myself. Tomorrow, this second batch will have an exam. The first batch has already done their exam so the best 100 girls with the top performers will be awarded prizes of their own laptops whilst the top 20 beneficiaries will get computer laboratories in their schools.”

Owusu-Ekuful visited the Cathedral JHS, St. Anne’s JHS, Yagbon JHS and Busunu D/A JHS.

The training is aimed at equipping beneficiaries with basic information and communications technology (ICT) and coding skills.

The theme for the year’s Girls-in-ICT is “Digital skills for life.”

The minister said the reason for focusing on girls is to bridge the digital gap between boys and girls. She noted that more boys have skills in the ICT and digital space.

Owusu-Ekuful urged the beneficiaries to take the training seriously because the skills they will acquire will be useful in future no matter where they find themselves.

The programme is being implemented in seven regions across the country.
