Glasgow secures government backing for 2026 Commonwealth Games bid
Government backing clears the path for Glasgow’s innovative bid, with no financial underwriting required from Scottish or UK administrations
The Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) has expressed its excitement after learning that Commonwealth Games Scotland (CGS) has secured crucial government support for its proposal to host the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.
The announcement, made on Tuesday (17 September), marks a significant step forward in bringing the event to Scotland.
CGF President Chris Jenkins confirmed the progress, stating: “We have been working with Commonwealth Games Scotland (CGS) and the Scottish Government for several months and are delighted to hear CGS has received confirmation of support from the government to enable them to progress with their proposal to host the Games in 2026.”
A central aspect of the discussions has been a £100 million investment from the CGF, with no financial underwriting required from either the Scottish or UK governments.
Commonwealth Games Australia has also pledged around £2.3 million towards the Glasgow concept, further enhancing its potential and demonstrating widespread support within the Commonwealth Games Movement.
Jenkins emphasised the importance of Glasgow 2026 in shaping the future of the Games: “We believe Glasgow 2026 will be an important first step in our commitment to reset and reframe the Commonwealth Games as a co-created, sustainable model that minimises costs, inspires athletes, and excites hosts and international federations.”
The CGF is now focused on concluding final discussions with key stakeholders and aims to formally announce Glasgow as the 2026 host city soon.
The Federation also extended its gratitude to Commonwealth Games Associations, athletes, international federations, and national governing bodies for their continued support and patience throughout the process.
The successful bid would see Glasgow, which last hosted the Games in 2014, once again take centre stage in the sporting world.
