GNFA begins investigation into fire at office of late MCE for Krachi East

The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS), says it has officially commenced investigations into the fire disaster at the office of the late Krachi East MCE Bernad Aborkugya Mensah.

The office was gutted by fire on Thursday (11 April), where several documents were destroyed.

The Oti regional fire commander, Assistant Chief Fire Officer II (ACFO II) Prince Billy Anaglate noted that they have commenced an investigation to identify the cause of the fire even from the very day the incident occurred.

Speaking to Asaase News’s Oti Regional correspondent Solomon Mensah-Ahiable, Assistant Chief Fire Officer II (ACFO II) Mr Prince Billy Anaglate explained, “We have started with the investigations, from the day of the fire outbreak and we are yet to ascertain exactly what happened before the fire. We do take account of eyewitnesses but most of the time we want to ascertain what really happened. So we use our own professional way of finding out what they are saying before we can confirm it”.

“Indeed, we were called by a passerby who is the manager of Prince Mark Cold Store at the time I was in Accra on official duty before the incident occurred. According to the manager, he was on his usual walk and saw that there was a fire at the office of the MCE. I quickly prompted my officers to attend to the situation which they did though the fire was at its growth stage before they got to the scene.

“The fire investigation is done in three stages which are, before the fire itself, during the fire fighting and after the fire. These are the stages we look at [during our] investigations and we have started the process to identify the cause of the fire,” he added.

Anaglate “… There is something we call in firefighting generally “Golden hour ” which is the time the fire starts, the time it gets to the service providers and if lives and properties will be saved. Everybody must get to the nearest fire station to get the numbers saved on their phones and written in their rooms. This when done will save lots of lives and properties” he urged.

Meanwhile, the Krachi East Municipal director Mr Issahaku Yakubo said, that vital

The late MCE was delivering a matriculation speech at the Dambai College of Education on Friday (5 April 2024) when he collapsed and was rushed to the Dambai Health Centre.

He was later moved to the WoraWora Government Hospital for further treatment but was pronounced dead on arrival at the facility.

The deceased, 60, was nominated by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to replace the late MCE, Francis Kofi Okesu, who died in September 2022.

Mensah was a former constituency chairman of the New Patriotic Party in the Krachi East Municipality.
