Golden Knights secure first win at 45th Chess Olympiad

Ghana's women's chess team triumphs over the US Virgin Islands, while the open team continues to struggle at the FIDE Chess Olympiad in Budapest

Ghana’s national chess team, the Golden Knights, claimed their first victory at the 45th FIDE Chess Olympiad in Budapest, Hungary, with the women’s team defeating the US Virgin Islands on Thursday (12 September).

After a challenging start on the opening day of the tournament, where they lost to Croatia, the team, featuring national champion Gertrude Banini, Dzidzor Esi Dotse, and Woman Candidate Masters (WCM) Maud Benson and Tobi Felix, made a strong comeback on day two against the US Virgin Islands.

Dotse secured a decisive win against Lois Williams, while Felix and Benson triumphed over Leah Williams and Jessica Cana, respectively. Banini, however, was held to a draw by Eve Williams.

The victory earned Ghana 3.5 points, lifting them to joint 107th position, alongside teams such as South Africa, Botswana, Trinidad & Tobago, and Japan.

The female team’s next challenge will be against Panama, ranked 123rd, on Friday (13 September).

In the open division, Ghana has struggled in their opening rounds against Egypt and Lebanon.

The team—comprising FIDE Master (FM) John Kojo Hasford, International Master (IM) Francis Eric Anquandah, Bernard Anhwere, and Cephas Clinton Fomevor—has secured just 0.5 points out of a possible 8.0 thanks to Anquandah managing a draw against Egyptian IM Kareim Wageih on the first day.

Currently, Ghana’s open team is ranked joint 159th alongside Mauritania, Aruba, the Maldives, Guyana, Guam, Togo, Tanzania, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, and Comoros. Their next opponents will be Eswatini, ranked 151st, on Friday (13 September) at 1:00 PM GMT.
