Government, CETAG reach agreement: strike resolution imminent
The government has agreed to unfreeze teachers' salaries as CETAG considers ending two-month strike
The Colleges of Education Teachers Association of Ghana (CETAG) has reached a tentative agreement with the government following successful negotiations on Monday (19 August).
The meeting included representatives from MELRP, the Ministry of Education (MoE), the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission (FWSC), the Ministry of Finance (MoF), the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC), the Principals of Colleges of Education (PRINCOF), and CETAG.
During the talks, the government agreed to unfreeze CETAG members’ July salaries, provided the association calls off its two-month-long strike, which has disrupted academic activities across all 46 colleges of education in Ghana.
The Minister of Employment, Labour Relations and Pensions, Ignatius Baffour Awuah, praised the commitment of both parties to resolving the impasse and urged CETAG to reconsider its stance for the benefit of students.
“We are hoping that CETAG will consult its council and tomorrow morning we will wake up to the news that the strike has been called off,” Awuah said.
CETAG’s national trustee, Maxwell Bunu, assured that the association is dedicated to reaching a resolution and will consult its council as agreed. “We are committed to finding a resolution and will consult our council as agreed,” he said.
A final decision is expected by Tuesday (20 August).
