Government condemns Ejura violence, charges security agencies to carry out swift investigations

The Minister of Information has urged the security agencies to be quick in getting to the bottom of this and other unresolved crimes

The government has condemned the incidents of violence which resulted in the deaths of two people and four others sustaining injuries in Ejura in the Ashanti Region.

Protesters poured out on to the streets of Ejura on Tuesday (29 June 2021) to demand justice for the murder of Ibrahim Mohammed “Kaaka”, who was attacked on Sunday by unknown men.

Addressing journalists in Accra on Wednesday (30 June), the Minister of Information, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, condemned the acts of violence in Ejura and called on the security agencies to carry out swift investigations into the Kaaka murder and the ensuing unrest in which the killings happened.

“Our security agencies should be quick and clinical in getting to the bottom of this and other unresolved crimes,” Oppong Nkrumah said.

“While we understand that police investigations sometimes take a while, it does not instil confidence in the population if such acts go unresolved and unpunished. So the police need to get to the bottom of this, and justice must be done.

“A credible investigation also needs to be conducted into the crowd rioting and crowd control incidents of 29 June. This will bring clarity to the sequence of events and ensure that if any persons acted inappropriately, those persons are punished,” the minister said.

Arrests

Kaaka, 45, was reportedly attacked by unknown people in Ejura in the small hours of Sunday (27 June).

He died on Monday afternoon (28 June) at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital in Kumasi, where he was receiving treatment.

At least two suspects have been arrested in connection with the Kaaka murder.

The suspects – Ibrahim Issaka and Fuseini Alhassan – were picked up on Monday evening in response to police intelligence.

Citizen journalist

Speaking to reporters in Kumasi, the Ashanti regional spokesman for the Ghana Police ServiceAssistant Superintendent Godwin Ahianyo, said that Kaaka was ambushed by two men in front of his house on returning home at roughly 1.30am on Sunday.

“This morning we would like to inform the general public that the regional command has arrested two suspects in the attack and murder of Ibrahim Mohammed, alias Kaaka, aged 45,” he said.

“The suspects are Ibrahim Issaka, alias Anyaas, and Fuseini Alhassan, currently in custody. Both were arrested at about 10.45pm on Monday 28 June 2021 following police intelligence,” ASP Ahianyo announced.

He said the police have commenced investigations to ascertain whether the murder was linked to Kaaka’s work as a citizen journalist or the #FixTheCountry movement.
