GPL: Asante Kotoko win at Karela, Hearts of Oak humbled by newcomers Basake Holy Stars

The 2024/25 Ghana Premier League season kicked off with an away win at Karela for Asante Kotoko, while arch rivals Hearts of Oak were stunned at home by newcomers Basake Holy Stars in Accra

Asante Kotoko beat Karela United FC 1-0 thanks to a first-half strike from Albert Amoah in their opening match of the 2024-25 Ghana Premier League season in Tamale, while Hearts of Oak were stunned by newly promoted side Basake Holy Stars.

Amoah rattled home the decisive goal in the 35th minute at the Naa Sheriga Sports Complex in Nalerigu on Sunday, September 8, 2024.

Coach Prosper Nartey Ogum’s side created a succession of chances to take the lead in the first half as United failed to make home advantage count.

The Porcupine Warriors are now off the mark in pursuit of wrestling the Premier League title from FC Samartex 1996 in a season which is just started.

Elsewhere, Prince Tweneboah scored Basake Holy Stars’ first-ever Premier League goal in their 1-0 win at giants Accra Hearts of Oak in their debut 2024-25 campaign.

The forward scored with a thumping header as early as the second minute to separate the two sides at the Accra Sports Stadium on Sunday September 8, 2024.

Basake Holy Stars are off the mark in their debut campaign in the Ghanaian top-flight, recording a famous win in the capital against the former African champions.

Nsoatreman FC  moved top of the Premier League table after a comfortable 2-0 win over Young Apostles FC at home on Sunday.
