Greater Accra expected to get ultra modern children’s hospital in Weija, says Okoe Boye

The Minister of Health also revealed plans to establish an infectious disease training centre in Accra to boost the region’s healthcare capacity

The Ministry of Health has announced that a new ultra-modern 120-bed children’s hospital is nearing completion in the Weija-Gbawe Municipality of Accra.

According to the sector minister, Dr Bernard Okoe Boye, the move forms part of efforts by the government to expand paediatric healthcare services in the capital, which has long relied on the “Princess Marie Louise Children’s Hospital” for years.

Speaking during a press briefing Wednesday (18 September), Dr Okoe Boye revealed that the construction of the new facility is moving swiftly, and the hospital is expected to open by the end of this year.

“Princess Marie Louise, it was built, I’m sure, before Ghana became independent in ‘57. That has been our only children’s hospital in the whole of the Greater Accra region. The only president who had the courage to build a new one is Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo. So when you go to Weija Gbawe Municipal, you’ll see a huge building next to it… ”

“This is an ultra-modern 120-bed children’s hospital that is being built and we’re working with speed to make sure that before the end of this year, Princess Marie Louise relocates to the new Weija Municipal Children’s Hospital,” Dr. Boye said.

Dr. Okoe Boye also revealed plans to establish an infectious disease training centre in Accra to boost the region’s healthcare capacity.

“So we also have some training centres for infectious diseases at Pantang, I’ve seen these structures” Dr. Boye added.
