Murder of Akua Denteh awful, tragic – President Akufo-Addo

President Akufo-Addo has described the murder of Akua Denteh, a 90-year-old woman, in Kafaba, Salaga South as awful and tragic

President Akufo-Addo has described the murder of a 90-year-old woman, Akua Denteh, by local residents of Kafaba in the Salaga South constituency who accused her of being a witch, as awful and tragic.

President Akufo-Addo made these remarks as he addressed a ceremony to inaugurate the Yapei Water System on Monday 27 July 2020, to provide potable water to 18,149 residents in five communities of the Central Gonja District in the Savannah Region.

The president expressed disgust at the killing of the old woman, saying: “It should not happen again.”

Beaten to death

Madam Akua Denteh was beaten to death in Kafaba on Thursday 23 July 2020 by residents of the small town who accused her being a witch and the source of certain strange activities in the area, including the slow pace of the town’s development.

President Akufo-Addo announced that he will make a personal contribution to the Akua Denteh Foundation to express his personal revulsion at the killing of the senior woman.

“It is vital that this does not happen again and we should all work together to ensure that never again should such acts disfigure the face of our nation,” the president said.

The incident was captured on video and has since gone viral on social media. The Inspector General of Police has dispatched a team of homicide personnel to investigate the murder. The incident has attracted condemnation from civil society organisations, politicians, gender and human rights activists across the country.
