Bawumia tells supporters: Avoid insults as you campaign
Dr Bawumia says the internal contest should not divide the NPP because the main enemy of the party in the 2024 general elections is the NDC
Vice President and flagbearer hopeful of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) for the 2024 presidential elections, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia has called on his spokespersons and supporters alike to eschew the politics of insults during the internal campaign to elect a flagbearer for NPP.
The internal process, according to Dr Bawumia, should not divide the NPP because the main enemy of the party in the 2024 general elections is the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and not each other in the NPP.
Dr Bawumia is one of 10 persons who have filed their nominations seeking to be elected as the presidential candidate for the ruling party ahead of the 2024 national elections.
The Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia is considered among the rank and file of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) as a leading contender for the NPP flagbearship role.
The Vice President made the call during the last leg of his tour of all the 34 constituencies in the Greater Accra Region to meet directly with party delegates ahead of the NPP’s presidential primaries on Saturday 4 November 2023.
“I want all of us to understand that the ongoing campaign is towards an internal [New Patriotic Party (NPP)] election. The main enemy is the National Democratic Congress (NDC), and so, in the course of this campaign, let us not insult and attack each other.
“We want peace. We want a clean campaign, and we want a clean election. We do not want you to go out there and insult or attack anyone. ” Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia said.
“After this internal election, we will need to form a united front to take on the NDC. This is why I constantly remind my supporters and spokespersons that they should never insult and attack anyone contesting me, ” he added.
Dr Bawumia stressed that the NPP is a family and that the party would need a strong united front to take on the NDC in the 2024 presidential and parliamentary elections on 7 December.
He stated that without this sense of unity and one family mindset, it would be practically impossible for the party to achieve its target of “breaking the 8” which is essentially to become the first political party in the history of the 4th Republic to win elections after two terms in office.
“We are one family, so let us stay together. When the contest is over, we will come back together as one family and make sure that the NDC doesn’t come to power. That is very important, ” Dr Bawumia remarked.
“Let’s keep the NPP. We need unity in the NPP because it is the surest way to guarantee the NPP’s ability to break the eight (8)” the Vice President further stated.
Dr Mahamudu Bawumia will, from Thursday 6 July 2023, take his ongoing tour of all the 275 constituencies in the country, the Ashanti Region, where he is scheduled to visit delegates in all the 47 constituencies in the region.
