Emmanuel Akwetey, the executive director of the Institute for Democratic Governance, has called on women to actively seek positions in local government.
The Affirmative Action bill, which has been in the legislative pipeline since the 1960s, has garnered significant attention from various stakeholders who believe its passage into law would pave the way for increased participation of women in politics.
Currently at the consideration stage, the bill has the potential to reshape the landscape of political representation in the country.
Speaking to Asaase News, Akwetey said, “I am optimistic that the affirmative action bill will see the light of day this year, providing a significant step towards bridging the gender gap in public offices.”
He expressed optimism that the affirmative action bill would finally see the light of day this year, providing a much-needed boost to the ongoing efforts to bridge the gender gap in public offices.
“The Affirmative Action bill has the potential to reshape our political representation, offering a more diverse and inclusive governance structure.”
He emphasised that encouraging women to take up roles in local government could be a key strategy in achieving this objective.
“Encouraging women to take up roles in local government is a strategic move to achieve gender equality and empower women in the decision-making processes.”
Akwetey highlighted the opportunities that the local government sector presents for women seeking to enter the political arena. Local government offices, he believes, offer a conducive environment for women to make a significant impact on decision-making processes and contribute to community development.
