The Inspector General of Police, James Oppong-Boanuh, has directed the Police Professional Standard Bureau to investigate the circumstances leading to the use of a police vehicle for political activities.
This follows the appearance on social media of a viral clip in which individuals clad in New Patriotic Party paraphernalia were seen jubilating in the back of a police pick-up with the registration number GP 3858.
The occupants showed flagrant disregard for the social distancing protocols introduced to counter the outbreak of the novel coronavirus disease.
Principled impartiality
A statement issued and signed by the director of public affairs of the Police Service, Sheilla Abayie-Buckman, said: “The attention of the Police Administration has been drawn to videos and pictures showing people with political party identity apparently rallying in police vehicles.”
The statement further said the Police Service does not sanction acts of this nature. It warned that any officers who are found culpable will be sanctioned accordingly.
“The Police Service is committed to its avowed principle of impartiality. The general public should be assured of the performance of police duties without fear or favour,” the statement said.
The viral video has elicited mixed reactions, with some members of the public calling for full sanctions to be applied after the investigation.
