Obunge: African youth must be trained for governance

Speaking to Kwaku Nhyira-Addo on the Asaase Breakfast Show on Monday (13 March), such initiatives could enhance the governance process on the continent

The deputy lieutenant to His Majesty King Charles III, Nims Obunge wants African leaders to institute measures aimed at training the youth to take up leadership positions in governance.

Speaking to Kwaku Nhyira-Addo on the Asaase Breakfast Show on Monday (13 March), he said such initiatives can enhance the governance on the continent.

Obunge said “we need to train young people for governance. It is essential that we create that enabling environment for them to actually benefit and not just dream about.

“There has to be a partnership between old people and young people to ensure development, but if Africa misses out on this then I must it has missed out on a trick for development.”

This year’s Commonwealth Day celebration is on the theme “Forging a sustainable and peaceful common future.“

About Commonwealth Day

This will be the first Commonwealth Day presided over by His Majesty King Charles III as king and head of the commonwealth.

The day will also mark the tenth anniversary of the signing of the Commonwealth Charter, which outlines the values and principles that unify the 56 commonwealth countries, representing one-third of humanity.

Commonwealth Day has been celebrated on the second Monday in March every year since 1977.

In recent years, there has been a shift from a single day’s observance towards a full week’s celebration, with Commonwealth Day as its focal point.
