It’s easier for NPP to get 85% in Ashanti Region with Bawumia ticket, says Napo

The vice-presidential candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) said the party's record in improving the lives of Ghanaians is clear

Dr. Mathew Opoku Prempeh, the vice-presidential candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has expressed confidence that the party can achieve its ambitious target of securing 85% of the vote in the Ashanti Region with Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia as presidential candidate.

Speaking at the Ashanti Regional Campaign Working Committee Meeting and Women’s Conference in Kumasi on Sunday (11 August) Dr Opoku Prempeh, also known as Napo, emphasised the strategic advantage of having Dr. Bawumia on the ticket.

Dr Opoku Prempeh highlighted the significance of Bawumia’s candidacy in mobilising support and reinforcing the party’s stronghold in the region.

He stressed that the current administration’s social interventions, including the Free SHS policy and National Health Insurance Scheme, would be better safeguarded under an NPP government.

“Our opponents said our party won’t vote for a northerner to lead us. But that agenda has failed. It is not true that the NPP won’t support Bawumia. Ashanti Region is solidly behind him. It is easier for the NPP to get 85% in the Ashanti Region with Bawumia as presidential candidate than any time in the history of the party”, he said.

“The NPP’s record in improving the lives of Ghanaians is clear, and Dr. Bawumia’s leadership will further strengthen our position. We must work together to ensure these programs continue and that we reach our goal of 85 percent in the Ashanti Region,” Dr. Prempeh urged.

Regional Chairman Bernard Antwi-Boasiako, popularly known as Wontumi, emphasized the party’s commitment to achieving its goals.

“Our target to win all forty-seven constituencies is still in motion. We will have to deliver it. The running mate has also given us an 85% target, which should be done as well,” he declared.

Historically, the Ashanti Region has been a stronghold for the NPP, with the highest percentage of votes ever attained in a general election being 76.2%.

The new target reflects the party’s drive to not only maintain but significantly increase its dominance in the region.

Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, MP for Suame and Chairman of the NPP Manifesto Committee, says reaching the party’s ambitious target of 85% of the vote in the Ashanti Region hinges on revitalizing the party’s organizational units.

He stressed the need for a robust structure to support an effective door-to-door campaign.

“Achieving 85% in the Ashanti Region is feasible, but it requires a well-organized party structure,” he said. “Our polling station agents have not been engaging with voters at their homes after the previous elections. To meet our goal, we need to reinvigorate our organizational units and ensure that our message reaches every voter.”

“It is good to aspire higher. If we look at our performance in the past four elections, our best has been around 76 percent. We will have to ignite the organizational units of the party. That is the only means to reach the target,” he added.

In addition to organizational efforts, Chief of Staff Akosua Fremah Opare has highlighted the crucial role of the NPP’s Women’s Wing in achieving the set target. She emphasized that the women’s wing must play a pivotal role in the campaign to help secure the desired outcome.
