A private legal practitioner, Osman Alhassan, has supported Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Godfred Yeboah Dame’s appeal to allow live broadcasts of court proceedings related to the Anti-LGBTQ+ Bill.
In a letter dated 7 May 2024, Dame requested Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo permit live broadcasts, citing significant public interest in the matter.
The request was subsequently approved by the Chief Justice and the case was telecast on Wednesday (8 May).
Speaking exclusively on Asaase Radio’s Big Bulletin on Wednesday (8 May), Alhassan, echoed Dame’s sentiments, emphasising the importance of transparency in a matter of great public interest.
“I think it is good that it is televised because it is a matter involving something of public interest and we can see the uproar, the fury about this. So many opinions that many Ghanaians are interested in knowing what goes on,” remarked Alhassan.
He further stated, “So if the Chief Justice allows the [public] the opportunity to follow the hearing in court, it would help from having any bad perceptions about proceedings and any prejudice about the outcome of the case.”
