I’ve lost a friend and a strong supporter – Bawumia eulogises late John Kumah

The presidential candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has said the sudden demise of the late John Kumah has been a personal blow

Vice-President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia has paid glowing tribute to the late former member of Parliament (MP) for the Ejisu constituency in the Ashanti Region, Dr John Kumah who died on 7 March 2024, at the age of 45.

The NPP presidential candidate in his tribute, described the late Member of Parliament of Ejisu as “a friend and strong supporter”.

“John’s contributions to the New Patriotic Party (NPP) were invaluable. He was not only a driving force but also a fervent advocate for advancing NPP agenda”, Dr Bawumia said in a message of condolence at the late MP’s burial and funeral service on Saturday (18 May).

“His sudden death in March has been a personal blow. Long before I decided to run for president, John Kumah was among the few party leaders and legislators to have publicly urged me to run and pledged his unending support. Through his public pledge, John supported me strongly, campaigning with me everywhere in the country,” he added.

A sea of mourners are currently in the Ashanti Region town of Ejisu to bid farewell to the late lawmaker.

Colleagues at Finance Ministry remembered Dr Kumah as an exemplary deputy minister and a caring man, a father of six who was beloved by those who worked alongside him.

“At our first meeting with the IMF mission in Accra, Dr John Kumah proved to be an indispensable member of the Ghana team.”

“He provided a lot of technical support and chaired key meetings. His efforts contributed to the Ministry achieving a staff level agreement in record time”, parts of a tribute by Abena Osei-Asare (MP), Minister of State at the Finance Ministry read.

Dr John Kumah died on Thursday (7 March) after battling a brief illness. His sudden demise. triggered a by-election in the Ejisu Constituency supervised by the Electoral Commission.

His successor Lawyer Kwabena Boateng with the New Patriotic Party has been sworn in after winning the fierce contest.
