Jurors in Bono and Ahafo Regions declare strike

The decision comes in response to the judicial service's failure to pay arrears of their allowances since October 2023

Jurors in the Bono and Ahafo Regions have announced an indefinite withdrawal of their services to the various high courts, effective Tuesday (18 June 2024), Asaase News can report.

The decision comes in response to the judicial service’s failure to pay arrears of their allowances since October 2023. This announcement was made in a formal letter addressed to the supervising high court judge.

In their letter, the jurors expressed their frustration and financial difficulties caused by the non-payment of allowances, which have left them unable to afford transportation to and from the courts.

“It is worth noting that since October 2023, we have not been paid any allowance,” the jurors stated. “We are, therefore, unable to finance our transport to and from the courts any longer.”

The jurors emphasised that their decision to strike is not taken lightly but is a necessary step to highlight their plight and compel action. They indicated a willingness to reconsider their strike if a firm commitment is made by the Judicial Service to settle the arrears promptly.

“We wish to assure you that we will reconsider our decision if a firm commitment is made to pay our allowances in arrears as soon as possible,” the letter added.

The indefinite strike is expected to cause significant disruptions in the high courts in Bono and Ahafo Regions, affecting the progress of ongoing cases and the administration of justice.

Legal experts and court officials have expressed concern over the potential backlog and delays that may arise from the jurors’ absence. The Judicial Service has yet to issue an official response to the jurors’ demands and the impending strike.
