The Kofi Annan International Peacekeeping Training Centre (KAIPTC) has successfully trained some security personnel in Ghana from various security agencies on electoral violence.
The course was designed to mitigate electoral violence and promote peace and security in the lead-up to the 2024 presidential and parliamentary elections.
The training, conducted over two weeks, was aimed at equiping participants with the needed skills to ensure a peaceful electoral process.
The Electoral Violence and Security (EVS) course saw participation from the police, military, customs, prisons, immigration, and the fire service.
Enhancing Capacities for Electoral Security
The EVS course is specifically designed to address electoral violence in West Africa. By providing law enforcement agencies with effective strategies for prevention, management, and response, the course aims to enhance the capacity of government security services to ensure free, fair, and peaceful elections.
Air Commodore David Akrong, deputy commandant of KAIPTC, commended the participants for their dedication and active participation.
He highlighted the importance of their contributions to the discourse, which aims to strengthen democracy in Ghana. “It is satisfying to know that you were all exemplary in your contributions,” he stated.
Support from the German Government
The deputy German ambassador to Ghana, Sivine Jansen, emphasised Germany’s commitment to supporting free and fair elections as a cornerstone of democracy.
She said the German Government has been a steadfast partner in promoting peace and security in Ghana.
Jansen noted that Germany’s support extends beyond security services to include training for journalists to ensure objective and ethical election reporting.
The EVS course is part of a broader strategy to reinforce democratic processes and stability in Ghana and the West African sub-region.
ACP Osman Abdul-Razak, the course director, explained that the modules were strategically developed to prepare security agencies to manage perceived and actual security-related violence.
The training covered how to handle media interactions, public relations, and engagements with political parties during elections.
Participants, including Commanders, were also trained on practical measures to address incidents on a case-by-case basis, fostering teamwork and collaboration among the different security branches.
Future Training Initiatives
With support from the German Government, KAIPTC plans to replicate the EVS course in other regions of Ghana. Scheduled sessions will take place in Kumasi from 10 June 2024, and in Tamale from 17 to 21 June 2024, further expanding the reach of this critical training initiative.
