Kennedy Agyapong’s “showdown” comment against Akufo-Addo misconstrued, says aide

A member of the campaign team of Kennedy Agyapong says his candidate's "showdown" comment has been taken out of context

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer aspirant, Kennedy Agyapong’s alleged threats directed at President Nana Akufo-Addo and Mahamudu Bawumia was misconstrued, Eric Ntiri, an aide to the Assin Central lawmaker has said.

Agyapong on Saturday threatened a “showdown” with President Akufo-Addo and his vice for allegedly chasing out his polling agent in the north in the first round of votes over the weekend. Swearing by the name of God, the visibly angry Agyapong threatened that he will challenge President Akufo-Addo anytime.

President Akufo-Addo, I will give you a show down… Vice President Bawumia, I will give you show down,” he said in Twi, while speaking on top of his voice in a telephone call at a voting centre in the Central Region.

The party has since hauled the MP before its disciplinary committee.

However, appearing on the Asaase Breakfast Show on Monday (28 August), Ntiri said some opponents are trying to paint Agyapong in a bad light.

“An action demanded a reaction, and mind you if you should hear this on the battlefield, where a person who is a polling agent, …. you have to inspire something into the people to stand their ground, it’s politics,” he said.

“Sometimes these antics and things that we want to bring and especially targeting the Ken Agyapong campaign won’t help, because people are just trying to push per how honest he is in facing issues to try and push towards a particular tangent, it won’t wash, Ghanaians are watching,” Ntiri added.
