Kofi Kapito commends PURC for marginal reduction in electricity tariffs

Kofi Kapito emphasised the need for consumers to tangibly observe the reduction reflected in their electricity bills or prepaid credit purchases

Kofi Kapito, the executive director of the Consumer Protection Agency (CPA), has commended the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) for the recent reduction in electricity tariffs for some categories of residential consumers.

The move, according to Kapito signifies a positive step towards easing the financial burden on Ghanaian households grappling with high utility costs.

Speaking on the 12 O’clock Report, Kapito lauded the PURC for heeding the calls of numerous Ghanaians who have long clamoured for relief from soaring electricity expenses.

“It’s good news for a section of our electricity consumers in Ghana; anything that would support the reduction of utility electricity, to be precise, it’s in a positive way,” Kapito remarked.

“I will take this opportunity to applaud the PURC for listening to the cries and complaints from the cross-section of Ghanaians as to the high cost of electricity during this hardship in our country that everybody is going through.”

While acknowledging the reduction of 6.56% as a step in the right direction, Kapito stressed the importance of transparent implementation.

He emphasised the necessity for consumers to tangibly observe the reduction reflected in their electricity bills or prepaid credit purchases.

“The implementation to be able to reflect so that when you pay your bill or you buy a prepaid credit, that 6.56% should reflect,” Kapito remarked.
