A presidential aide to Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia, Kofi Tonto, has dismissed the National Democratic Congress’s (NDC) calls to “reset” the country, comparing it to treating Ghana like an iPhone that can simply be rebooted.
Speaking on Asaase’s TownHall Talk on Friday ( 6 September) Kofi Tonto, questioned the NDC’s logic of such a drastic move, saying, “A nation is not an iPhone. Somebody needs to tell them.”
He argued that while the country faces significant challenges, especially in its economy, suggesting a full reset disregards the progress the NPP has made in recent years.
“Are you going to reset the few positives as well?” the aide asked, pointing out that even amid the difficulties, there have been accomplishments by the NPP worth preserving.
He further challenged the opposition to specify which era they intend to reset to, rhetorically asking, “Are you going to reset it to 1992? Or are you going to reset it to 2001 or 1957? Or are you going to reset it to four years of doomsday? Are you going to reset it to when cholera killed 150 people?”
He said that the solution lies in building on successes rather than erasing history.
“I agree there are challenges with the economy,” he conceded. “But you can argue that these are the things I’m going to do to solve the economic challenges. These are the things I’m going to do to build on the successes that we are already benefiting from.”
He urged the opposition and critics to propose solutions rather than focus on a narrative that suggests wiping the slate clean. “But you don’t reset a nation,” he emphasised.
The remarks come in response to ongoing debate surrounding the manifesto and promises made by both parties ahead of the elections in December.
