Allied health workers at Ghana’s largest hospital, the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital (KBTH) have suspended a planned strike after agreeing to talks with the National Labour Commission (NLC).
The KBTH chapter of the Ghana Federation of Allied Health Professions (GFAHP) had been due to continue industrial action, which kicked off on Friday (2 August), in a dispute over the appointment of an independent body to oversee their operations.
However, the group has agreed to postpone the strike following a request from the NLC to mediate in the dispute.
“We received a letter on Friday from the NLC that we should meet them,” said Dr. Francis Kwakye Antwi, chairman of the KBTH chapter of the GFAHP. “We [had] a general meeting today and [the] general membership resolved that we suspend the strike action and then resume work tomorrow (6 August).”
The group, which represents 18 professional associations including medical laboratory scientists, physiotherapists, and radiographers, had halted outpatient services at the hospital in a bid to force management to meet their demands.
Dr. Antwi warned that if the dispute is not resolved by Wednesday (7 August), as promised by the Minister of Health, Dr. Bernard Okoe-Boye, the strike will escalate into nationwide action.
“Dr. Okoe Boye asked for seven days to resolve this matter that will be expiring on Wednesday,” he said. “If there is no conclusion to what we are actually demanding, we’ll go back. We have no option but to go back. It will be a nationwide strike. This one was just Korle Bu but when we are to resume, it will be a nationwide strike.”
