Kwahu Summit 2023: Intra-Africa trade could help Africa achieve SDGs, says Kategekwa

Joy Kategekwa

Dr Joy Kategekwa, a strategy advisor on Africa at the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) has said an implementation of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA ) could help African countries achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), also known as the Global Goals, were adopted by the United Nations in 2015 as a universal call to action to end poverty.

Appearing on the Asaase Breakfast Show on Tuesday (25 January) ahead of the upcoming Africa Prosperity Dialogues dubbed Kwahu Summit 2023, Kategekwa said the summit will open the pathway for sustainable development.

“A critical pillar of the UNDPA is the need to facilitate the private sector to enable them utilise the opportunity therein within the AfCFTA to the benefit of all on the [African] continent and even beyond. In all this, it is clear that whenever the world’s supply chain is disrupted, Africa suffers and this shows the need for the AfCFTA,” she said.

“We are seven years away from the time point set for the achievement of the SDGs … on the back of the recent crisis, there is a clear opportunity to achieve it [the SDGs] with intra-African trade.”

Kategekwa added, “This is where the Kwahu Summit 2023 provides a unique opportunity [African leadership] to meet, dialogue and figure out solutions that will open a pathway for sustainable development.”
