Kwame Jantuah to Ghanaians: Let’s not bastardise our courts

The private legal practitioner said such actions undermine public confidence in the judiciary, which plays a crucial role in upholding justice in the country

Private legal practitioner, Kwame Jantuah has called for an end to the ongoing criticism of Ghana’s legal system, following recent discussions on the Office of the Special Prosecutor’s (OSP) ruling in the Airbus bribery scandal.

Speaking on Asaase Radio’s The Forum on Saturday (10 August), Jantuah expressed concern over the trend of disparaging court decisions whenever the outcomes are unfavourable.

He emphasised that such actions undermine public confidence in the judiciary, which plays a crucial role in upholding justice in the country.

“When verdicts come out from our courts, be it Supreme Court, Appeals Court, high court, be it Special Prosecutor, we are quick to bastardise if we don’t agree,” Jantuah said.

“That creates some kind of non-confidence in our legal system, and I think we have to stop it.”

Jantuah explained that the judiciary exists to serve the people, and if individuals are dissatisfied with a ruling, they have the right to appeal through the appropriate legal channels.

“When the court brings the verdict out … if you don’t agree, appeal,” he added.

“The courts are there for the people and when the people want to be heard in cases, they don’t take it to the executive, they don’t take it to the legislature, they take it to the judiciary. So I’m appealing; let’s not as always bastardise our courts,” he added.

Jantuah also addressed the specific case of the OSP’s ruling on former President John Mahama’s involvement in the Airbus scandal. He stressed that anyone unhappy with the decision should seek redress in court.

“I’ll end by saying, anybody who does not agree with the OSP’s verdict on President Mahama, take it to court,” Jantuah concluded.
