Kwesi Pratt Jr. praises Akufo-Addo for investing heavily in education

Mr Pratt made the assertion in his submissions during a panel discussion on Peace FM’s morning show programme, Kokrokoo on 16 April 2024

Seasoned Journalist and Managing Editor of the Insight newspaper, Kwesi Pratt Jr., has stated that he is extremely impressed with the huge infrastructure investment made by President Akufo-Addo in the education sector of the country.

Mr Pratt made the assertion in his submissions during a panel discussion on Peace FM’s morning show programme, Kokrokoo, hosted by Kwami Sefa Kayi on Tuesday, 16 April 2024. Other members of the panel were Nana Akomea, deputy campaign chairman and strategist for the 2024 campaign team of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), and Professor Kofi Agyekum, popularly known as Opanyin Agyekum.

“I have chanced on some information that points to the fact that a lot is going on in the education sector. I know what I am talking about and Kwami, you know that I do not talk without facts. A lot is happening, and the construction of new science laboratories is also ongoing.

“This morning I was enquiring from Nana Akomea [leading member of the New Patriotic Party, NPP] who was a member of the panel, why the government has made all these massive investments in the country’s education sector but very little is heard about them.

“The education sector undoubtedly has challenges that we all read and know about but if you look at the construction of new science laboratories going on across the country, it explains why examination results in the sciences have greatly improved and I think this is what the government should be talking about,” Kwesi Pratt said.

Mr Kwesi Pratt suggested that there are obvious economic challenges and that is trite knowledge. However, he indicated that he “is extremely surprised and impressed” by what the Akufo-Addo administration has been able to achieve in the education sector and he thinks the government should trumpet its achievements much better than it is currently doing.

Digitalization versus education

Pratt added that between digitalization and education, he believes that the government should be leading its communications with its achievements in the education sector instead of the digitalization agenda that the government and the NPP party are currently pushing.

Nana Akomea, deputy campaign chairman and strategist for the presidential candidate of the NPP, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, on his part, said he agrees with Mr Pratt on his thoughts about the immense achievements of the Akufo-Addo government in the education sector and the need to publicise them.

However, on the issue of digitalization, Nana Akomea indicated that he disagrees with Mr Pratt. He added that per polls conducted by the NPP, digitalization is appreciated by a huge section of the Ghanaian population and he thinks that both areas, education and digitalization must be proclaimed together to all Ghanaians.
