Mahama: Court must review two-weeks remand handed to Democracy Hub protestors
The accused were arrested by the police during a 21-23 September protest at the road intersection adjoining the 37 Military Hospital in Accra
The 2024 presidential candidate of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Mahama is pushing for a review of the decision by the court to remand some Democracy Hub protestors who were arrested over the weekend.
The Accra Circuit Court 6 has remanded some Democracy Hub demonstrators in custody for two weeks.
The accused were arrested by the police during a 21-23 September protest at the road intersection adjoining the 37 Military Hospital in Accra.
They pleaded not guilty to charges of unlawful assembly, unlawful damage, assault of a police officer and conspiracy to commit a crime.
Reacting to the development on Facebook on Thursday (26 September), Mahama said remanding the protestors for two-weeks is high-handed and an abuse of their right.
‘’We must balance our need to maintain law and order with protecting the rights and freedoms of our citizens. Remanding Democracy Hub demonstrators for two weeks is high-handed and an abuse of their rights.
‘’The youth of Ghana have a right to engage in manifestations to protect their future especially in respect of key issues like the destruction of the environment through illegal mining.’’
‘’Draconian judicial decisions such as this won’t stop them from speaking out. The authorities must request the judge to review the remand decision and grant them bail immediately,’’ Mahama said.
