Mali breaks off ties with Ukraine

This is after a spokesperson for the Ukrainian military intelligence agency the country was involved in acts of terrorism in Mali that resulted in the death of members  of the Malian Defense and Security Forces

The transitional government of the Republic of Mali on Sunday (4 August) announced that it will sever diplomatic ties with Ukraine with immediate effect.

This is due to remarks made by Andriy Yusov, spokesman for the Ukrainian military intelligence agency, where he admitted the involvement of Ukraine in acts of terrorism in Mali that resulted in the death of members  of the Malian Defense and Security Forces.

These sentiments were also reiterated by ambassador of Ukraine to Senegal, Yurii Pyvovarov.

Due to these statements the transitional government of the Republic of Mali have decided to take the following actions:

  • With immediate effect sever diplomatic ties with Ukraine.
  • Measures will be taken to prevent the destabilisation of Mali by taking special attention to the Ukranian embassies in the sub-region.
  • Formally calling for action from regional and international bodies like the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) and the United Nations (UN).
