Matthew Opoku Prempeh (aka “Napo”), the Member of Parliament for Manhyia South in the Ashanti Region (New Patriotic Party), has resigned as the Minister of Energy with effect from 18 July 2024.
Napo tendered his resignation letter to President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo on Thursday (11 July 2024) following his official outdooring as the running mate to Dr Mahamudu Bawumia at Jubilee Park in Kumasi on Tuesday (9 July).
President Akufo-Addo, in a rely to Dr Opoku-Prempeh, also dated 11 July 2024, accepted his resignation.
“This is to acknowledge receipt of your letter of 11 July 2024, informing me of your decision to resign from Government as Minister for Energy with effect from 18 July 2024.
“In the circumstances, I accept your resignation as I know that you are going to play another vital role in the fortunes of our party, the New Patriotic Party. I count on you to effect a smooth transition of the affairs of the ministry into the hands of the person designated to succeed you,” President Akufo-Addo’s response to Napo’s resignation letter read.
“I want to express to you my profound gratitude and appreciation for the exemplary work you have done in my government, both as Minister for Education and Minister for Energy,” Akufo-Addo’s acceptance letter, sighted by Asaase News, also said.

In a press release announcing Napo’s resignation, signed by Eugene Arhin, the director of communications at Jubilee House, the Office of the President said: “This decision has been made to enable Dr Opoku Prempeh to focus on his new role as the vice-presidential candidate and running mate to the 2024 presidential candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Vice-President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia.
“The Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Abu Jinapor, MP for Damongo, has been asked by President Akufo-Addo to exercise cabinet oversight responsibility [for] the Ministry of Energy,” the press release said.
“President Akufo-Addo has expressed his deep gratitude to Honourable Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh for his dedicated service to the government and the people of Ghana. His tenure as Minister for Education and as Minister for Energy has been marked by a stellar record of accomplishments and significant contributions to the education and energy sectors.
“In light of Dr Opoku Prempeh’s resignation,” the statement further said, “President Akufo-Addo has asked the Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Honourable Abu Jinapor, MP for Damongo, to exercise cabinet oversight responsibility [for] the Ministry of Energy.
“Additionally, the Minister-of-State-designate at the Ministry of Energy, Herbert Krapa, will be responsible for the day-to-today administration of the ministry. The president has asked the two persons to liaise closely with Dr Opoku Prempeh to ensure a smooth transition in the affairs of the ministry,” the statement added.
