The Bono Regional Hospital in Sunyani has received 232 pieces of medical equipment, valued at more than US$200, 000, from the non-governmental organisations PATH Ghana and Kybele International, together with other partners.
The NGOs made the donation under the “Making Every Baby Count Initiative (MEBCI 2.0)”.
The equipment includes five incubators, which were donated for specific use by the hospital’s neonatal intensive care unit (NICU).
In an interview with Asaase News, the deputy country manager for PATH Ghana, John Bawa, said: “Every baby that is born on to this earth deserves to live and thrive, and so the main aim of MEBCI is to be able to make sure all these children are able to survive and live their lives fully.”
Between 2013 and 2019, PATH Ghana collaborated with Kybele International, the Children Investment Fund Foundation and the Ghana Health Service under MEBCI 1.0 to provide training and equipment to reduce neonatal mortality in the Volta, Ashanti, Eastern and Brong-Ahafo Regions.
MEBCI 2.0 is targeting three referral hospitals: the Greater Accra Regional Hospital in Accra (Ridge), Eastern Regional Hospital in Koforidua and Bono Regional Hospital in Sunyani.
The medical director of the Bono Regional Hospital, Cardinal Newton, received the equipment.
“The machines will help in reducing the neonatal mortalities,” Newton said. “We are even expanding the NICU so that at least we can take care of all the patients referred to us without any problem.”
The lead expert for Kybele International, Fiona Bryce, applauded the staff for managing the services and current equipment in the NICU well, notwithstanding the challenges the hospital faces.
