Mental Health Alert: Substance abuse among youth could near crisis level if… says expert

Speaking on the Asaase Breakfast Show as part of Mental Health Awareness education campaign on Thursday (9 May), Rev Dr Joseph Kofi Aidoo said the rate at which the youth are engaging in substance abuse in the country is worrying

Substance abuse among the youth in the country is gradually on the rise and could hit a crisis point if action is not taken, Rev Dr Joseph Kofi Aidoo, a specialist psychiatrist at the Madina Polyclinic has said.

According to Aidoo, a senior high school in the country recently recorded incidents of substance abuse even though the substance in question has been banned.

Speaking on the Asaase Breakfast Show as part of the Mental Health Awareness education campaign on Thursday (9 May), Aidoo said the rate at which the youth are engaging in substance abuse in the country is worrying.

“We had an outbreak of Rufunol ( sedative) which is a banned substance, in a particular secondary school we had like three or four cases where the students came and they tested positive.

“And now they are mixing a lot of things alcohol with cannabis. People are taking hot air balloons, people are doing amphetamine.”

“There is a high rise of use of substances among our youths and we may hit a crisis if something is not done about it. The thing with using substances is that you can get to a place of dependence called addiction,” Aidoo said.
