Military not withdrawn from Mepe, says Volta Regional Minister

Archibald Letsa said the military have been very supportive, “especially in ensuring that there is no loss of lives in the region”

The Volta Regional Minister, Archibald Yao Letsa, has said that the military have not withdrawn from Mepe, contrary to reports in the media.

Dr Letsa said the military have been very supportive, “especially in ensuring that there is no loss of lives in the region”.

He also said the Volta Region is receiving enough support from stakeholders in the aftermath of the Akosombo Dam spillage.

Speaking on the Asaase Breakfast Show on Monday (23 October), the minister said: “As far as I am aware, they [the military] are around. They have not been withdrawn and we are still working with them.

Adequate support

“… We are receiving enough support,” Dr Letsa said. “What we have to do is to manage it better. We have to co-ordinate and manage the resources better and that is our responsibility; we believe that we’ll do that.”

He added: “The police are also here protecting the safe havens … so we are receiving the needed support and we thank everybody …”

At least 31,000 people in nine districts spanning the Volta, Greater Accra and Eastern Regions have been affected by the spillage of excess water from the Akosombo and Kpong Dams, the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) said.
