The Majority Leader in Parliament, Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu has described the opposition National Democratic Congress’s (NDC) directive to its MPs to abstain from approving the ministerial nominees of President Akufo-Addo as unfortunate.
The Minority in Parliament has said they will participate in the vetting of the nominees but will abstain when it comes to considering them for approval.
However, appearing on the Asaase breakfast Show on Wednesday (22 February), Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu warned that the development could be detrimental to parliamentary democracy.
“If the party begins to wade into the conduct of business at the committee level, then you have extreme polarisation, beginning from the committee level,” the leader of the House said.
“And that could be very detrimental to the parliamentary democracy that we believe should be checking extreme partisanship. It’s dangerous to our democracy, I think it’s most unfortunate to say the least,” he said.
The Majority Leader said they will mobilise their members to approve the nominees if the Minority fails to give its approval.
“Both parties may not have the numbers on the day but if push should come to shove, we’ll find a way to get those of them outside to come and participate,” Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu said.
