Nalerigu: Bawumia commissions ultra-modern Astroturf to promote sporting activities

Vice-President, Alhaji Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has commissioned a second ultra-modern astroturf in Nalerigu in the North East Region to promote sporting activities in the area.

The construction of the project started in the middle of 2023 by Wembley Construction Limited and was commissioned on Sunday (7 January 2024) by the Vice-President and Sports Minister, Mustapha Ussif, among others.

The astroturf is named ‘Naa Sheriga Sports Centre’, after the father of the current Overlord of Mamprugu, Naa Bohagu Mahami Abdulai Sherigah II.

The vice-president, speaking to the media after the commissioning, said he is very impressed with the execution of the project and other sports facilities commissioned so far in the country to promote sporting activities.

“First of all, I would like to thank God for making this possible today. I believe, as always, that with God, everything is possible. I am very, very impressed.”

“This is one of the best astroturfs I visited in this country… So, I am very happy with the work…the facilities are first class and I just hope that we maintain them. I am a happy man today and I’m very impressed with the work that has been done.”

“I think that it will be a facility that will help sports, particularly football, in Nalerigu-Gambaga and its environs and I hope that they will use it fully to get it done,” Vice President,” Bawumia said.

Meanwhile, the Minister for Youth and Sports, Mustapha Ussif, said there has been tremendous improvement in the sports sector, indicating that from 2017 until date, the NPP government has constructed 152 astroturfs in the country and will continue to build some.
