The Nguadohen of Edina Traditional Area, Nana Kweku Amissah I, has called on the government and management of the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority (GPHA) to consider local expertise in employing staff to work at the yet-to-be commissioned Elmina Fishing Harbour in the Central Region.
According to him, the people of Elmina possess valuable knowledge and expertise that can greatly benefit the success of the harbour.
Nana Kweku Amissah I added that by employing locals, the country can ensure that the unique needs and challenges of the community are met and that the harbour operates in the best interest of everyone.
“As a stakeholder and member of the Edina Traditional Council, I strongly urge the government to prioritise the employment of locals in the management and operations of the newly constructed fishing harbour. This is not only an opportunity for job creation, but also a chance to empower and uplift the community. My immediate goal is to use all of my contacts and goodwill to make this the reality”, he stated.
Nana Kweku Amissah I further called on the people of Elmina to come together and advocate for the inclusion of their own people in the operations of the fishing harbour.
The €85 million Elmina Fishing Port rehabilitation and expansion project which commenced on 1 August 2020, is about 98% complete.
The fishing port is expected to cement Elmina’s position in the fishing and salt industries and enhance its tourism potential to boost the local economy.
The port project has been designed to have a fish market, fish mending and auction hall, a workshop building, an ablution facility, toilets, a day-care centre and a school.
