Nana Susubribi Krobea Asante asks: Why are Ghanaians so obsessed with reviewing the constitution?

Nana Susubribi Krobea Asante is urging Ghanaians to focus on the spark that has led to developments in other countries and not be so obsessed with changing a document

Nana Susubribi Krobea Asante, the director of the United Nations Centre on Transnational Corporations is not happy with the numerous calls by some Ghanaians to change the 1992 Constitution.

He said the manner in which the 1992 Constitution has been criticised could create the impression that it is dispensable.

Speaking with Kent Mensah on Sunday Night on Asaase Radio, Nana Susubribi Krobea Asante said, ā€œfirst of all, this is a constitution which for 30 years has sustained the governance system of Ghana which has earned an international reputation.

ā€œThis is the base in which we have changed government from one side to the other without any major incidence.ā€

He said, ā€œThis is a constitution which has enabled Ghana to be described as an oasis of stability and constitutionalism in a turbulent region. So why are we always at it?

ā€œAnd in my view, the more the constitution is criticised with such violent terms, the more it gives ammunition to those who think that the constitution is expendable

He believes that sometimes the things which the citizens are worried about are not traceable to the constitution at all.

ā€œSome of the ills; corruption, monetisation of elections, the politicization of everything these are not results of the constitution. These are the results of a certain political culture.ā€

ā€œI will even go to the extent of saying that this is an extreme form of party politics. Itā€™s not necessarily a product of the constitutionā€¦ so letā€™s isolate the things that bother us. And a constitution even if itā€™s perfect will not resolve our problems,ā€ he added.

Nana Susubribi Krobea Asante said a constitution if it is perfect will not make people less corrupt and will also not make people less involved in the monetisation of elections.

ā€œWe should really look at what has been the spark that has led to developments in some of these Asian countries and not be so obsessed with reforming or changing a document.ā€
