Navigating 2023 as a family: Encourage children to open up, says Albert Ocran

Speaking on The Asaase Breakfast Show, Rev Ocran said, "I would like to emphatically say that families must communicate about challenges they face with children because children are creative"

Author and executive coach Rev Albert Ocran has said that children grow up on memories, which form the biggest part of their lives, therefore parents should always create a congenial atmosphere for meaningful conversations at home.

Speaking on The Asaase Breakfast Show, Rev Ocran said, “I would like to emphatically say that families must communicate about challenges they face with children because children are creative when given the task of solving problems.”

“Allow children to inquire,” he added. “When we were growing up, we were taught to obey before complaining, but the children that we are bringing up these days need a little explanation.”

Obey before complaining era over

According to him, we should not tell children to only obey before they complain.

“We must engage our children. We need to have intelligent conversations with them rather than just throwing instructions at them.”

He added: “Engage children in the issues you face at home as parents and listen when they’re talking. Allow them to talk, listen, write down their thoughts, and ask questions without interrupting them.

“You’ll be surprised at how well our children can rise to the occasion and help us navigate 2023 as a family.”
