NDC blasts Akufo-Addo for honouring “incompetent” health minister

The national chairman of the NDC Johnson Asiedu Nketiah said he was glad some decent awardees rejected the national award last week

The opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) has described the conferment of award on the Health Minister Kwaku Agyeman-Manu as a “desecration” of the national award.

Speaking at what it termed the “True State of the Nation Address” at the University of Professional Studies in Accra on Monday (20 March), the national chairman of the NDC Johnson Asiedu Nketiah said he was glad some decent awardees rejected the award.

“Instead of the president sacking the serially incompetent Minister of Health Kwaku Agyeman-Manu, he decided to confer national honours on the minister’s corruption and included even more corrupt appointees and companies to desecrate the national awards ceremony,” he said.

“Dr Kwame Nkrumah (Ghana’s first President) established this award scheme with the view of honouring people and institutions that have distinguished themselves in service and sacrifice to propel Ghana’s growth and development.

“Mr President our nation’s founder Dr Kwame Nkrumah didn’t intend for the national award scheme to honour criminality by cleverly sprinkling and sandwiching a few meritorious awardees among nation wreckers,” he said.

Purely national event

Meanwhile, President Akufo-Addo has said, the awards ceremony “is a purely national event, devoid of partisan, ethnic or religious considerations, and organised solely in recognition of the services offered by its recipients to the growth, development, progress and prosperity of Ghana”.

President Akufo-Addo presents the Order of the Volta to an award-winner at the National Honours and Awards 2023 in Accra (14 March 2023)

“I, as the President of the Republic – the font of honour – act as the head of state, and not as head of government, in the distribution of awards,” the president said.

“I can happily say that I am not aware of the political sympathies or views of the overwhelming majority of today’s awardees.

“Their politics is of no moment to me, only their exploits in favour of Mother Ghana,” President Akufo-Addo said.
