NDC Manhyia South organiser’s comments reckless, says analyst
There have been calls on National Democratic Congress (NDC) Ashanti regional executives to reject statements of Alhassan Mustapha
Political analyst Joshua Jebuntie Zaato has criticised the recent remarks made by Alhassan Mustapha, the Manhyia South organiser of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), labelling them as reckless. The political analyst further stated that the comments could foster a climate of fear and insecurity within the political climate.
Speaking on the Big Bulletin on Tuesday (20 February), Zaato expressed his dismay at the behaviour exhibited by regional executives of the NDC, emphasising that Mustapha’s comments lacked the caution necessary for healthy democratic discourse.
“These comments are reckless, don’t contribute to healthy democracy, they create a system of fear of insecurity, and if we don’t deal within the proper context, it doesn’t make it look like we are going to do something that we’ve been doing, which is normal elections,” Zaato remarked.
Moreover, Zaato lamented the challenges of legislating against such inflammatory rhetoric, emphasising the need for individuals to exercise reason and intelligence in their public statements. He called upon the regional executives of the NDC to disavow Mustapha’s remarks unequivocally, asserting that such conduct undermines the principles of a rightful thinking society.
“What is rather disappointing to me is the conduct of the regional executives because any reasonable person listening to that audio, watching that video and that person knows that these are comments that should be rejected and by any rightful thinking society,” Zaato stated.
Mustapha was captured in a viral video that saw him threaten violence to safeguard the victory of the NDC’s flagbearer, John Dramani Mahama, in the run-up to the 2024 general elections.
However, according to the NDC Ashanti regional chairman, Augustus Nana Kwasi, who was speaking to the media, the Manhyia South organiser’s comments were justified, stating that he did nothing wrong as his statement was triggered by a comment by his New Patriotic Party (NPP) associate.
In response to Mustapha’s controversial statements, authorities have initiated legal proceedings against him. Mustapha faces charges of offensive conduct and threats of death stemming from a viral video capturing his incendiary remarks ahead of the 2024 General Elections.
